The Difference Between CT and MRI: Why and When to Use Which?

CT scans and MRI scans are two different medical imaging methods used to create detailed images of internal body parts, such as bones, joints and organs. They both help diagnose a wide range of medical conditions. They reduce the need for exploratory surgery and other diagnostic procedures. They both have similar uses, but they produce images in different ways.

Northwest Radiology Doctors Recognized as Indianapolis’ “Top Doctors”

Annual Indianapolis Monthly feature highlights best physicians in their fields

Northwest Radiology Network is pleased to announce eight of its doctors are included in Indianapolis Monthly as 2019 “Indy’s Top Doctors.”

The list honors the top board-certified specialists based on peer reviews and recommendations from other physicians.

“We are honored to see so many of our radiologists recognized this year, and many of them for multiple years in a row,” said Northwest Radiology Executive Director and CFO Linda Wilgus. “This annual guide of physicians and specialists highlights those professionals who have the expertise and experience as well as the respect of their fellow doctors. Peter D. Arfken, MD
Peter D. Arfken, MD – Diagnostic Radiology
Dr. Arfken’s interests include body imaging and nuclear/PET imaging. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed a residency and fellowship in body imaging at Indiana University Medical Center.
Eric E. Beltz, MD
Eric E. Beltz, MD – Neuroradiology
Dr. Beltz’s expertise is head and neck radiology and neuroradiology. His interests include advanced imaging for tumors, dementia imaging and csf leaks. He received his doctorate degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and served as Chief Resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden. After completing his radiology residency, he completed a neuroradiology fellowship at Emory University.
Richard L. Hallett II, MD
Richard L. Hallett II, MD – Diagnostic Radiology
Dr. Hallett’s special interests include cardiovascular imaging and cardiac CT angiography. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Indiana University School of Medicine-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular imaging at Stanford University Medical Center in California, where he continues to teach as Adjunct Assistant Professor Radiology.
Brian Jellison, MD
Brian Jellison, MD – Neuroradiology
Dr. Jellison’s interests include advanced, physiologic neuroimaging techniques along with ENT head and neck imaging. He also performs a wide range of neurointerventional procedures, with specialized experience in spine therapies. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at University of Wisconsin. He then completed a fellowship in neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
Benjamin B. Kuzma, MD
Benjamin B. Kuzma, MD – Neuroradiology
Dr. Kuzma’s special interests include imaging of the brain, spine, head and neck. He performs myelography and CT-guided biopsy. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in neuroradiology at The George Washington University Medical Center.
John A. Morton, MD
John A. Morton, MD – Diagnostic Radiology
Dr. Morton’s specialties include nuclear medicine and PET imaging. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Indiana University Medical Center.
Frank J. Pistoia, MD
Frank J. Pistoia, MD – Neuroradiology
Dr. Pistoia’s special interests include imaging diagnosis and therapy of acute stroke as well as kyphoplasty. He is a senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and former President of the Indianapolis Stroke Coalition. He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, completed a residency at Hartford Hospital and a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Wells’ special interests include breast imaging and intervention. She graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a residency at Indiana University Medical Center.

Northwest Radiology Network Welcomes Meyer as Musculoskeletal Radiologist

Northwest Radiology Network welcomes Susan J.F. Meyer, M.D., as a new musculoskeletal radiologist.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in biology from Indiana University, Dr. Meyer received her Doctor of Medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

She completed her radiology residency in diagnostic radiology at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

She is board certified by the American Board of Radiology. She is also a member of the Radiological Society of North America and American Roentgen Ray Society.

Dr. Meyer has presented numerous lectures on the musculoskeletal applications of CT and MRI, particularly in the realm of sports injuries. She has taught radiology residents, musculoskeletal radiology fellows, primary care sports medicine fellows and orthopedic sports medicine fellows as well as podiatry residents. She has also contributed to a number of publications.

Dr. Meyer joins one of Indiana’s largest and most experienced staff of physicians specializing in quality high-end imaging services.
