What is Ultrasound Imaging?

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. It is safe, simple and painless. No radiation is involved, and radiologists and physicians can see the images in real time.

Ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate the thyroid gland, breasts, abdominal and pelvic organs, testes and blood flow in arteries and veins.

For our ultrasound patients, Northwest Radiology offers high-quality, affordable imaging by a team committed to providing the best patient experience. We are here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Safe and widely used
  • Used during pregnancy, to image the breasts and diagnose a variety of heart conditions
  • Images are computed in real time
  • No special preparation is necessary before an ultrasound scan.

  • An ultrasound examination is performed by a trained technologist, called a sonographer.
  • The sonographer applies a water-soluble gel to the area being examined to prevent air bubbles from getting between your skin and the transducer, which is like a wand.
  • A transducer is gently pressed against the skin and moved back and forth to visualize the area of interest.
  • The examination usually takes approximately 15-30 minutes, after which you will be able to return to your normal activities and regular diet.

  • Each ultrasound unit has a computer that processes and converts the resulting patterns into detailed images for review.
  • A Northwest Radiology board-certified physician trained in ultrasound imaging will study this image and determine if more tests are needed.
  • Results are sent to your ordering physician and also posted to our patient portal.
