What Is Ultrasound Imaging?

Ultrasound Imaging is the process of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of high frequency sound waves. No radiation is involved in Ultrasound. Ultrasound is a great way to observe the body’s internal organs. The images are computed in real time, which allows radiologists and physicians to observe tissue movement and blood flow that is crucial to the diagnosis of many illnesses.

Who Should Have An Ultrasound?

A physician determines whether an ultrasound is needed for a patient. Many patients are familiar with the use of ultrasound during pregnancy to take images of the fetus and determine growth, overall health and gender of the fetus. However, there are many other types of ultrasound imaging exams that are helpful in diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Your physician will determine if this is the best test for you.

Patient Comfort

Most ultrasound exams are painless. The most discomfort you might feel during this exam is from the pressure applied to the body from the transducer. It is important that the technologist apply enough pressure to make secure contact with the skin to ensure that the sound waves are accurate. A clear gel will be applied to the area of the body to be imaged.

After the exam, the patient may resume normal activities.

Results

Your results of your Ultrasound imaging study will be interpreted by a Northwest Radiology Network board certified radiologist and sent to your referring physician for follow up. Please check with you physician’s office for results.
