For the UFE procedure, a thin tube is inserted at your wrist or groin, and using x-rays, the radiologist guides it to the blood vessels leading to your fibroids. Tiny particles are then deployed to cut off the blood flow to the fibroids. This quick, efficient process takes about an hour, with the best care at your bedside. Typically, you can resume work and daily activities within 5-7 days, offering a seamless route to improvement without surgery.
While many places perform Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) in a hospital setting, requiring overnight stays, we're proud to offer UFE as an outpatient procedure. This allows for a same-day home return, no hospital stress, and reduced risk of infection, ensuring a safer recovery. This streamlined approach minimizes disruption to your daily routine, and facilitates a quicker return to your normal activities.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) effectively reduces symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain, while also preserving the uterus, making it a preferred option for women looking to keep their fertility options open. This non-surgical approach not only eases discomfort but also safeguards future pregnancy possibilities, without compromising reproductive health.
Fibroids are benign, or non-cancerous, tumors that emerge within or around the uterus, often resulting in discomfort and potentially impacting fertility.
Uterine fibroids can lead to a range of symptoms, affecting your quality of life in several ways:
The exact reason why fibroids develop is still under investigation. That being said, we know there are certain risk factors associated with their development including fertility, family history, race (black females are most affected), and obesity.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a trusted procedure that’s been used for nearly 50 years, offering a less invasive option compared to traditional surgery for removing fibroids. It involves a small tube, as thin as angel hair pasta, being inserted through an artery in your wrist or groin. This tube, guided by X-ray images, is carefully moved to the arteries that feed your fibroids, which require a lot of blood to grow. Once in place, tiny particles are released through the tube into these arteries, blocking the blood supply to the fibroids and causing them to shrink. The entire process usually takes about an hour and is performed on both sides of the uterus. After the tube is removed and any bleeding is stopped, you’ll rest in bed for a few hours before you can head home to recover comfortably in your own bed.
Determining if you’re a candidate for Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) involves a few considerations, such as the size and location of your fibroids, your symptoms, your overall health, and whether you wish to preserve fertility. Generally, if you have symptomatic fibroids and prefer a non-surgical treatment option, you might be a good candidate. The best way to find out, is to schedule a consult with our providers, who will evaluate your specific situation.
