Diagnostic Imaging Services Offered at NWR

Northwest Radiology performs Diagnostic Imaging Services at all our outpatient imaging centers.  Many exams fall under this description.  For the most part, Diagnostic Imaging pertains to:
  • Routine diagnostic radiography
  • Barium exams (Upper gastrointestinal tracts)
  • Contrast studies (IVP)

Common diagnostic imaging procedures are chest x-rays, plain films of the abdomen, skull, spine, pelvis and extremity x-rays.  The use of x-rays allows the radiologist to view inside the human body to diagnose an injury or illness.  When completed for appropriate situations, x-rays are very safe and highly beneficial. It is extremely important that x-rays are not misused or overused.

WHAT IS DIAGNOSTIC X-RAY?

Diagnostic x-ray, also called Radiography, is an examination that uses electromagnetic energy beams to produce images onto film, or the most recent way is to process into a computer.  Diagnostic x-rays are completed for various reasons such as diagnosing bone injuries, chest diseases or abnormalities of the chest, and masses or tumors.

Special precautions are taken with pregnant patients.  Always inform your physician and radiologic technologist if you suspect you are pregnant.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING DOES NOT INCREASE THE RISK OF CANCER

There have been no studies of radiation in humans that have demonstrated an increase in cancer from the doses used in diagnostic x-rays. (Reference:  eMedicine Health)
